The Department offers an Honours degree that is designed for students who have a strong aptitude in mathematics and physics and provides a solid foundation in the fundamental engineering disciplines. The additional courses in this programme can be used to supplement courses with an applied engineering focus, such as those given in the normal programme, or to receive more advanced education in engineering science if desired.

  • Students in the Regular or Honours Programs who want to specialize in aeronautical engineering and design have options in these fields.

While the program is intensive, there is still time for a variety of extracurricular activities! Students are involved in professional societies such as the Canadian Aeronautics and Space Institute (CASI), the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), as well as different campus organizations.

  • Faculty and student relationships are highly close. Students and teachers gather frequently for social functions at which they can exchange ideas and get to know one another better.

Mechanical engineers are traditionally involved with mechanical system conceptualization, design, implementation, and operation.

  • Aerospace, energy, manufacturing, machinery, and transportation are typical fields of labour. Mechanical engineers are in high demand due to the broad nature of the profession.

Many mechanical engineers go on to pursue other careers. Graduate education is beneficial to professionals working in research institutions, consulting businesses, or corporate research and development.

  • Biomechanics, systems, robotics, and computer applications are some of the specialty fields!

Program Requirements

  • Admission is based on McGill’s calculation of your “Top 6” pre-university (4U, 4M) course average. A minimum of six 4U and/or 4M courses are required for admission.
